Jinsoo Kim :
Knife coating with coca cola
How to Mix A Black Iron Oxide Stain for Lowfire Ceramics- A Guide for Teachers
This video is intended for teachers or someone who wants to mix up a lowfire iron oxide. This is what I use for my Ceramics I Themed Coil Pots in lieu of traditional glaze- (as glaze obscures much of the detail)
Here is a list of a playlist of all the videos in the Ceramics I Themed Coil Forms:
https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLj0pNzEmvM_rnYfK7AzsXqYWt2W1tcXyn
In this video, I mix up a lowfire black iron oxide. I use the Frit 3195 - which is for lowfire temperatures. You can use a highfire frit for a highfire application. I purchased my frit locally from Cornell Studio Supply in Dayton Ohio. They are awesome- Here is their contact info:

I use a respirator in the video to avoid breathing in any of the dust from the powders as I am mixing. I do normally mix my dry ingredients outside, however, it was storming at the time, and I just needed to get it done inside.
Here is a link to a respirator similar to mine:
Respirator for Dust- must be well fitting-

The two powdered ingredients are FRIT 3195 and Black Iron Oxide. Below are the links from Cornell’s website:

I am using about a 1:1 ratio of the oxide and frit- but have done as much as 2x the oxide as the frit. It must sit for 24 hours to really absorb, and then if after that time it looks weak, I can add more oxide and mix. Ultimately, it should look like you have dipped a piece in india ink.
We are using Standard 103 clay for this exercise. It is lowfire and grogless red earthenware.

I am a public high school ceramics teacher at William Mason High School in Mason, Ohio. (Mason is currently the largest high school in Ohio!) As a potter, I have been working in clay for over 30 years, and I have been teaching for over 28 years, the past 20 have been specifically teaching high school ceramics. I love what I do! I have my own studio in my home basement, where I work on my personal pottery for my Etsy site;

Juliet Cutler : I want to mix an iron oxide stain to brush on and sponge off bisque. I'll fire to cone 6. I'm wondering if you still recommend this technique for mid-range? Would frit 3134 or 3195 work for this? I'd also be mixing a much smaller quantity. From your video you are mixing equal parts oxide to frit, but do you have a recommended ratio for dry ingredients to water?
Cyndi Hedden : For the final firing, can I put glazed pieces in the kiln with the dipped Iron oxide? I also teach HS art at Margaretta High School in Ohio- we did this project with my Art I students and it turned out great. Thanks for sharing.
Scott McCormick : I use the following formula: 2/3 dry clay trimmings, 1/3 black iron oxide. Put into container and then add water and mix with immersion blender.
Felicci Dela Pena : Will I get the same results for Cone 6 firing? I understand that sometimes Black Iron Oxide turns red-ish when fired
Kazia Ginsberg : What would you say the ratio of each is? Thank you!
