Canon EOS 1Ds mark II in 2022 and beyond? Thoughts and review from a professional photographer
Here is a review of the Canon EOS 1Ds Mark II camera. a very rugged and tough professional camera that is currently one of the cheapest full frame cameras available on the second hand camera market. I bought mine back in 2004 and have used it professionally on hundreds of shoots. In this video I share my experiences, talk about the good and bad points of the camera and consider whether it is still relevant in this day and age.
Conrad Greer : I had one for around 5 years and loved it, upgraded to the 1DS MKIII three months ago and the mkIII is a big upgrade in all respects, especially the way the menu works. Still think the mkII is relevant today fo people that want a solid full frame DSLR which does not break or break the bank.
N J C Williams : I prefer the older digital cameras like Canon 5D Classic as it's basic and less to go wrong. I had thought of Canon 1Ds mkii but went for the Canon 5Dmkiii and simply love using it. Also I have started using the 5D Classic again as I feel it's nice to use a Camera that's simply just basic and not full of unwanted or unneeded technology as this takes away from the craft. Is it me, or are people these days just looking at gear and not really interested in image taking. The great thing about the 5D Classic is this, it only takes photos and because it was Canons first full frame camera aimed at enthusiasts and Pro's looking for back up body the tech was simple by todays standards. Lastly the sensor for that particular camera was partly developed by Kodak, hence the filmic look which hasn't been carried on.
chbrownie18 : I was out shooting mine today and you are spot on - it's a heavy piece of pro gear with superb build. The menu system as in many pieces of tech, is designed for the person who designed it, not the end user. It is not intuitive and a month or two away from it takes you back to ground zero. I have had mine for about twelve years and bot it off eBay so I have had a few generations of batteries. The aftermarkets that came wit it died immediately and the two OEMs didn't last much longer. I then bot two new OEMs and they are still working but perhaps not as well as a new aftermarket I bot last year - ie the aftermarkets are getting better although they are still metal hydride ie legacy. I am still buying lenses for it and expect to get a 5d Mark IV or 5SD/R so I will be covered for higher res.
sean burke : Hi Roy, I wanted to upgrade to a full frame from my canon 760d but being furloughed and short on cash decided to exchange. I wanted something in the 5d range and was offered a mkii in exchange. I thought a lot, researched and watched your video reviewing the camera which helped me decide. Although I have lost 3mp and a number of helpful features and am more than happy with the real benefits of shooting with this full frame professional quality camera and feel justified in my decision. I love the mkii and will keep it even when hopefully upgrading to the mkiv at some point in the future. Even with the R6, R5, R3 on the market the 5d mkiv is my current dream camera. In the mean time I love using my 5d mkii.
Mark Nielsen : I picked up one of these in early 2019 as my first full frame body with a couple of Sigma Lenses for $450CAD. Managed to source an OEM battery for under $50 which has worked great. It took a bit to manage the clunky menu and focus settings, plus going directly to the camera 'on' switch after 10 years of Rebels top 'on' switch, but now when I have the weight in my hand the camera has been turned on without any thought...Yes, its' a beast in the hand, but I'm always surprised at the comments I get of 'nice camera', but I've learned that it's not the camera to take on a few hour hike unless there will be a guaranteed epic shot. Once I got the focus control sorted, I must say how impressed I was with the sharpness of the shots with plastic lenses I had at the time and the focus speed blew away any previous Rebel camera I have had. Shortly after acquiring the 1Dsii, I had the opportunity to acquire a 7Dii that I couldn't turndown mainly wanting the 10fps feature for sports action capture. I have learned high frame rates just creates more frames to cull out in most situations and as stated in one of other Roy's other video that usually you just need the one frame and with practice, one could get it with a single shot providing you can get the correct shutter speed, which has me considering 5Dsr as the next full frame body for my uses. Yes, the dust removal spots are an issue, but I don't print enough images from it to matter to me, if I were a professional, that would be different story for sure. The one thing I do love about mine, is that crisp shutter action (mine with over 275k actuations) and sound, reminds me of my fathers old Pentax and my old T90. Really enjoying the content Roy.
Canon 1ds Mark 3. Thoughts from a professional photographer in 2021
My thoughts on the Canon 1ds Mark III DSLR camera in 2021. I have been shooting professional assignments with this camera since its launch in 2007. For the last few years it been retired and sits on the shelf in my office. In this video I show some of the photographs I have shot and give my opinion on some of the good and bad aspects of this classic camera. This camera cost over £5000 pounds when new but can now be found for as low as £350.

Gavin J Cotton : Fab review Roy. Technology moves on so rapidly, and so does the marketing and advertising that goes with it, and the net result suddenly means older tech almost appears obsolete, but this review just proves the opposite. In some ways I feel modern cameras are packed full of features, only because the manufactures 'Can' and as it often turns out, most of the tech packed into them, never gets used. This camera was designed for the working pro, and it gives them precisely what they needed, hence why it's just as relevant now, as it was back in 2007. Great work mate, keep it up:)
Conrad Greer : Great review Roy. I finally found a mint 1 DS MK III two weeks ago after searching for a few years to upgrade from my old 1DS MK II. BY luck I found one with 1500 actuations and not a mark on it, still in original packaging with all the software and cables - all for the bargain price of 470 British pounds. I have to admit it is a big upgrade and I am more than satisfied with the camera. This should last me for the rest of my life. As an amateur, I just cant afford or justify to spend on a DX model, as fantastic as they are.
zosozoso2 : Great review! I had mine since 2012, and it is still rocking, use it together with 5Dmk4, actually I sold the 5Dmk3 and keeped 1DsIII, as I found out that at iso 100 where I usually shoot, the image file was actually better then 5Dmk3. 1Ds is just epic...
Robert Greene : I bought one a few months ago with less than 1500 shutter actuations. Still under 1800 its fun to use. You have to think a little more, but the results are great. And I shoot with a Sony A7RIII and a canon R6. I actually had a 1DX and sold it to get the 1DSiii. For some reason the 1DX had weird colors that I didn't really care for.
Adrian Jones : The 1Ds MkIII was the first full-frame body I bought as a second-hand body, went from a poor Canon 400D straight to the big league, what a beast of a camera, a friend of mine came out with me a few years back, and I'd borrowed a 100 - 400 mm and I did not notice, but my friend was convinced that I had changed my name to Moses, as wherever I stood with this combination, the people would just part like the Red Sea!
